Hey guys, it's Mark and Toby here with Abs After 40 – and today, we are hitting LEGS!

Leg day is important because if you perform the proper lower body exercises, you can actually boost your body's production of the most important male hormone: testosterone… Now this is even more important for guys like Toby and myself because we are both over 50.

So in this video you'll see our T-boosting leg workout – We will also be showing you key pointers on how to avoid potential injury during some of these more intense leg exercises. Let's get after it!

Workout Breakdown:

Complete 10-12 reps of the following 4 movements: Back squats, step-ups, leg extensions, alternating lunges.

2:08 – Let's start with warming-up on the back squat. We are going to do about 10 to 12 reps to ensure our joints and ligaments are warmed-up enough to prevent any tweaks or injuries from occurring.

5:01 – Exercise 1 — Set 1: 10 reps at 185lbs

9:12 – Exercise 1 — Set 2: 10 reps at 225lbs

15:25 – Exercise 3: 10 reps of leg extensions with 45lbs

19:10 – Exercise 4: 10 reps of alternating lunges with 35lb dumbbells

20:00 – Exercise 4: 10 reps of walking lunges with 35lb dumbbells (more intensive variation of the lunge exercise)

    1. +Mattias Wännman he didn’t really though did he. He just said he can’t get
lower like younger people who go a to g . Good squat forms means at least
hitting parallel if he can’t do it he should of given a valid reason eg 1/
“I have had knee replacement surgery so can’t hit depth” or 2/ “I have
mobility issues and need to work on mobility as matter of priority to hit
depth” or 3/ “I don’t usually squat so can’t hit depth” etc etc

  1. Increasing your testosterone naturally through training won’t make much of
a difference in terms of your muscular development or lean body mass
preservation. It takes a 500-600% increase to make a difference and this
    can’t be done naturally.

    1. +Mario Tomic
Maybe not for that end, but surely enough to mantain you busting nuts until
much later in your life, which is good enough for most.

    2. +Mario Tomic you are on point. What the gentlemen in the video may not know
is that are is directly related to testosterone out; at least naturally.
Beginning at age 13 males produce 200 mg/dl. At age 30, this decline begin
at roughly 10% per decade. The only to increase testosterone middle age and
beyond is testosterone supplementation. I don ‘t know of a doctor who will
prescribe testosterone for muscle enhancement particularly since I believe
its still a class 3 regulated substance. There would have to be a medical
      reason for a prescription.

    3. +Wayne Williams typo in the above. I should have said ” what the gentlemen
in the video may not know is that “age” is directly related to testosterone
      output.

    1. They do have different applications. Walking lunge is better from a
functionality stand point. Performing the walking lunge will be more
benificial for athletic movements. The standing lunge can be more
beneficial for explosive movements, if you explode up through each rep.
When it comes to building simple strength though, one exercise isnt any
      better than the other.

  2. I’m going to be 50 next year and weight train 4 days a week for the past 4
years( with my wife)….and work hard too, not like the young dudes that
spend more time looking at their phones. What the heck are they doing on
the phones anyway? And why do they look so tired? 🙂 Anyway, weight
training is more important in your later years than anytime in your
life…too bad recovery time is much longer than when I was younger. It’s
like no pain no gain to a whole new level! And it kinda sucks that weight
    training has become an addiction.

  3. That guy speaking is apparently 53 years old. And while his body looks like
fairly young and muscular, his face actually looks fairly old. Actually I
would have guessed he was close to 60 based on his George Bush face alone.
