Q&A: "Foods That Boost Testosterone Levels?"

Hey what's up guys, Sean Nalewanyj here with another Muscle In Minutes Q&A where I give quick, to the point answers to your fitness questions.

So, today’s question is, what are the best foods out there to eat to naturally boost your testosterone levels. So my advice here is just to recognize the fact that optimizing your natural testosterone levels is really not going to be determined by whether you specifically eat oysters or nuts or avocado, but instead it’s going to be determined by your overall diet and your overall lifestyle as a whole.

You’ll find a lot of articles online that list things like “10 super-foods that boost your testosterone” or something along those lines, but really that just sort of misses the big picture.

The truth is that there really aren’t any “special” food items out there that are going to magically make a big measurable difference to your testosterone levels on their own, and instead I really would recommend that you just focus on the more basic, overall factors.

Make sure that you’re getting enough fat in your diet, this is a really important one, so somewhere between 20-30% of your total calories and definitely no lower than 15%. You want to make sure that you’re getting enough protein so somewhere around 1 gram per pound of body weight daily. That you’re getting a good restful sleep each night. That you’re training intensely in the gym on a consistent basis. That you’re managing stress levels effectively. And that you’re getting enough of certain vitamins and minerals, specifically vitamin D, zinc and magnesium which is a topic that I addressed in a previous video and I'll link in the description box below.

Eating certain food sources might help out simply because they might be higher in fat and protein content which might help to bring your daily totals into the proper range if they’re currently too low, but assuming that your overall macronutrient intake is properly structured at the outset, then going out of your way to consume a higher amount of red meat or egg yolks that's really not going to magically boost your testosterone levels into an above-normal range, and also keep in mind that if your testosterone levels are already within the normal range to begin with, then there’s not a lot you can do aside from actual anabolic steroid use to further raise those levels high enough in order to positively impact muscle growth or gym performance anyway.

What Is The Best Testosterone Booster?

To put it simply, testosterone is the single most important muscle building hormone in your entire body. The higher your natural test levels are, the faster and more efficiently you'll gain muscle.

Because of this, supplement companies have come out with an endless number of different "test boosters" designed to raise your natural testosterone levels for improved gains.

But do testosterone boosters work? If so, what is the best testosterone booster on the market?

You'll find many products in this category, including tribulus, DAA (d-aspartic acid), maca, fenugreek, avena sativa, ZMA and longjack. However, the truth on these "natural testosterone boosters" is simple: none of them have ever been shown in reliable research to raise test levels high enough to positively influence muscle growth or training performance.

It's important to realize here that increasing testosterone on its own is NOT enough. A small increase of a few % here and there might look interesting on paper, but in order for that to actually benefit you in the gym, you'd need a large increase of several hundred percent or more, which at the moment can only be achieved through the use of actual anabolic steroids.

Testosterone boosting herbs and vitamins are nothing more than a marketing ploy. They might have a small positive effect on overall libido, but in terms of directly influencing muscle growth, they're next to useless.

The "best testosterone booster" out there is simply hard training in the gym, good sleeping habits and a well balanced diet that contains an adequate amount of fat. Don't bother wasting your money on pills and powders that claim to raise testosterone to above-normal levels, as there isn't a single shred of evidence to suggest that they're actually worth spending your hard earned money on.

3 Testosterone Boosting Supplements That Work

Although testosterone boosting supplements are a multi-million dollar industry, the reality is that there is no reliable research currently available to demonstrate that these products can raise and sustain natural testosterone levels to a high enough level for positive effects on muscle growth and strength gains to take place.

Testosterone boosting herbs such as tribulus, maca, longjack and avena sativa may be useful for increasing libido, but not for bodybuilding and fitness purposes.

The one thing you can do, however, is use specific supplements that will optimize your testosterone levels if they are currently at a slightly below normal range.

The first 2 natural "testosterone boosters" that might be of use in a situation like this are magnesium (200-400mg daily) and zinc (20-30mg). These minerals are drained from the body through sweat and play an important role in maintaining proper testosterone balance. Deficiencies are common in hard-training lifters, and supplementation can bring them back to the proper level.

The second testosterone boosting vitamin is Vitamin D3 at 2000-5000IU per day. Unless you live in a very warm climate and spend multiple hours a day outside in the sun, there's a very good chance that your vitamin D levels will not be at the proper range. This can negatively impact testosterone production which may impact muscle growth and fat loss. Vitamin D supplementation may also help out when it comes to maintaining balanced mood and energy levels.

Although these 3 testosterone increasing supplements will not take you to an above normal range, they will help to optimize your natural test levels if they have been lowered as a result of hard-training and lifestyle factors. You can either go with a high potency multivitamin or just purchase all 3 items separately.
