Does marijuana really lower testosterone? If so, how much does smoking marijuana lower testosterone? Is there any real world proof to back up the idea that smoking weed will lower your testosterone and hinder your muscle gains in the gym? Is there any link at all between marijuana and testosterone? That's what we're going to discuss in this video…

While I'm not a marijuana smoker myself, I'm often asked from my online followers about the implications of smoking weed and working out. Specifically "Does smoking marijuana reduce the body's testosterone production?"

Now I used to say "YES, marijuana lowers testosterone levels" because that's what I heard from some sources back in the day. But I never actually did any research to try and validate this information.

So last weekend I did some homework by searching google to try and find out once and for all if smoking weed would have any impact on a man's testosterone levels. Now this certainly wasn't a formal research project by any stretch of the imagination, it was just me looking stuff up on google.

But none the less I couldn't find a darn thing that could validate that smoking marijuana had any negative impacts on testosterone levels.

To summarize this is what I found…

Marijuana has been said to interfere with the production of testosterone and other hormones associated with reproduction, causing possible infertility among adult users and delayed sexual development among adolescents.

However, there is no evidence that marijuana lowers testosterone levels or that it impairs male reproductive functioning.

In epidemiological surveys of marijuana users, no problems with fertility have emerged as important. In laboratory studies, researchers have been unable to find any negative impacts on testosterone levels from casual use of marijuana.

However, one study that administered very high THC doses – up to 20 marijuana cigarettes per day for 30 days showed a slight decrease in sperm concentrations. But the test results remained within normal ranges and probably would not have affected actual fertility.

So to answer the question:
Does Marijuana Lower Testosterone Levels?
I don't think it does.

Does that mean I recommend that you smoke weed?
Heck NO!

I don't think it's safe or healthy to breathe any smoke into your lungs, regardless of the source. But for those of you who are going to smoke up and get high regardless, at least it won't lower your testosterone levels.

  1. I was literally thinking about this yesterday and hoping you would post a
video. And VOILLA, you have already read my mind. Thanks Lee!

  2. Please post your comments and feedback below. And if you have any
suggestions for future videos that you’d like to see, please let me know
    :-)

    1. +Lee Hayward I came across your video in a google search wondering about
any causal link with marijuana use and low testosterone. In August of 2015,
I started having chronic insomnia and sleeping pills took too long to set
in, too long to wear off and my heart felt jittery in the morning. A friend
of mine recommended I try marijuana edibles and I was reluctant at first, a
self-declared proud product of DARE, but I gave it some extensive thought,
and decided to try them out. Most relaxed, most restful sleep in my life. I
eventually got a letter for medical cannabis and ate edibles every day.
Fast forward to February of 2016, I discovered that I had hypogonadism –
low Testosterone, more than 100 points below the lower range for mne.
Great, at 36, my body is acting like it’s 66. It took a while for my
insurance to determine I needed testosterone cream and a month to
preauthorize its use, but I eventually got on Testosterone Replacement
Therapy. I immediately saw a change in everything: gone was the chronic
insomnia. I was actually interested in sex, when I had not been interested
in it since November; I was in the mindset that I was better off without
it. I had increased energy. I was motivated. With the chronic insomnia
gone, I started to question the continued use of the medical marijuana. I
was concerned that I was becoming what seemed like a functional stoner –
eating edibles sooner in the day after work to get to sleep sooner so that
I didn’t feel so foggy in the morning. So, I stopped once I started
Androgel. Two weeks into taking Androgel, my bloodwork was tested and my
testosterone fell below 200. Not only that, what energy I did have was gone
by the end of the day and body hair started to fall out. I’m waiting to see
an Endocrinologist and I am supposed to get blood taken next week to
determine if it has fallen or increased. In the meantime, I have not taken
edibles in 4-5 weeks, and I feel so good about not being stoned at night,
and foggy in the morning that I can’t help but start to think now that
there is some sort of causal mechanism in play between the two. I continue
      my research.

  3. I personally feel that my test levels have not been lowered. I honestly
believe mine have been increased and I do the deed every day lol

Paylasmak istedim.

  5. I smoke every night before I have to go to bed.. Cuz I have some problem
sleeping.. But anyway I been working out for10 weeks and so far I gained 19
pounds… I also have extreme metabolism. So weed help me for my sleeping
    problem.

  6. With this, as with many things you need to honestly gauge how it effects
you. How does it make you feel? For some people it might make them
energetic and confident, for others it might make you paranoid and timid.
Looking for blanket answers that cover ever human physiology will never
    work.

    1. +Aerational Entertainment too high thc levels gives you paranoia/stress
feelings, for a weed to be enjoyable it needs to have good CBD levels in
proportion of the thc levels, now I’m not saying we need to be purists and
only smoke weed with 50/50 though

  7. i get better erections when i smoke weed and i last much longer 15-20 mins
id say it can increase test levels initially

    1. +AreFallout wow that’s some intelect you got there bruv, studies have shown
it actually does initally increase test levels
. plus weed is a know aphrodisiac and gives great erections and orgasms

  8. ya it does if you smoke daily for many years and don’t hit the gym. That
should be common sense though. I was always an athlete up until about 15
when i started smoking pot daily and have done so for just over 15 years. I
used to be full of piss and vinegar, loved to fight.. yadda yada and slowly
( yet faster than everyone around me) started to soften up, became more
understanding and compassionate, less violent. I became more about art and
music, astronomy, love the fellow human being. Thought i was getting wiser
which i probably was but unbeknownst to me my T was dropping. Had all the
signs of low T but mind you was also a big drinker and partier but i know
it was the bud that caused it primarily. It doesnt effect everyone the same
way but thats how it effected me. I would work out and got pretty decent
size but always felt id make bigger gains if i didn’t puff ( not during
always after). Like i said it effects different people different ways but i
think it is medically proven to lower T to some degree, Mind you the junk
food eating , laziness and weight gain associated with some smokers doesnt
do any good for it either. If i ever were to get real serious about
building muscle again id cut it out but i just love the herb my friend so i
treat myself after a good work out.

    1. +Noartist Wait so is the affect on testosterone permanent, or does it
return to normal once you stop?

  9. Omg sex on weed is better than any Viagra. Anyone who smokes will know
this. Not tobacco but just pure weed smoke through water ie bong.
Weed is actually very healthy consumed raw and contains all essential amino
    acids.
    Great videos mate

  10. Now for everyone reading this please note that this is from my own
experience and in no way does it contribute or come from any legitimate
    studies on cannabis.

So a few things to get out of the way first… I’m not a bodybuilder or
athlete of any kind and I also am not a junkie with no life ambition, I am
merely a regular guy working a desk job on average between 8-12 hours a day
since I was 23 (I am now turning 30 BTW). Needless to say this is not the
best recipe to maintain a good body, training or eating routine. Don’t get
me wrong it can and has been done before but all I want to get across is
that I train when I can and in the past I smoked a joint or two almost
every night for months at a time.

I could go on and on about the benefits of cannabis but to focus on the
POINT – Does Marijuana lower testosterone, yes or no? In a simple yet not
so straight forward answer…. In my own experience – It depends on how
much you smoke on a daily basis and what quality of cannabis you are
    smoking.

If you smoke crap on a regular basis it really affects your testosterone on
a noticeable level! The main reason I believe it is not the cannabis itself
so much that affects your T levels (even though some studies have HINTED at
the possibility) as it is smoking in general that affects the circulatory
system which is bad for your “entire package” in general. Cheap or
questionable weed tends to also have a multitude of harmful pesticides and
other environmental toxins imbedded in them from lazy, limited or
inexperienced growers planting them in lets say IFFY soil, this in turn
poisons and affects your body in a combination of ways and the above end up
lowering your T levels in varying degrees.

The reason why I claim this is because during my periods of getting hold of
some really good bud, I would smoke very little to get a desired high, pain
relief and relaxing state with no negative effects popping up even after 4
months! (the longest I was on good cannabis)

But when I didn’t have a trusted and reliable dealer I notice that my sex
drive and muscle mass did go down after a couple of months without changing
anything else in my life. Everything steadily became normal again after a
few weeks of either getting sick of bad bud and not smoking or getting back
on good bud, so in short if you smoke the sticky and believe yourself to be
a bodybuilder… QUALITY IS KEY, this obviously can be said for anything in
life but in this case it is straight forward. Bad or questionable cannabis
equals a drop in T levels where as quality cannabis hardly affects it at
    all.

    1. +Christiaan Klopper Does weed have a permanent affect on testosterone or
does it return to normal once you stop?

    2. +Breaker 555 – There are no permanent effects I have experienced,
everything returns to normal within roughly two weeks tops depending on how
long you have been smoking for.

    3. You’re welcome, stay healthy and remember to always practice caution and
moderation when you are using something even if it’s only recreationally.

  11. As an on and off smoker for 20 plus yrs. who has been body building for
roughly the same amount of time, I will give all the benefit of my
knowledge and experience. weed probably doesn’t lower testosterone enough
to affect gains. that said, If you’re in good shape, smoking once in
awhile before lifting can be a benefit. you can have more focus and less
boredom. additionaly, you may enjoy music more and feel like you have more
energy.( a plus when you have been at it for years and are not as excited
to be hitting the gym as a person in their prim ewould be.) However, if
you introduce marijuana more often into your pre workout by smoking it your
lung capacity will; be affected. thus making it harder to complete later
reps and resulting is less gains. I recommend no more than once a week by
way of inhalation prior to workouts. edibles on the other hand, at your
discretion. futher, I do not recommend smoking before cardio. too much
resin in your lungs will affect you negatively .

    1. +crystalpurityify Do you know if weed has a permanent affect on
testosterone or does it return to normal once you stop?

  12. If you’re prone to anxiety and panic, things like meetings or counseling
won’t likely work. Thanks to Nemery Thentel’s website (google him) I found
my way to freedom, and I can feel that sober bliss I missed from so long
    ago.

  13. Weed usually makes me really energetic and horny.. i never understood the
pothead stigma.. i feel like it increases my testosterone

  14. Weed is my preffered choice of supplement.
Ive made serious gains over the years just smoking weed and training.
